Making Aadhaar Card Application Accessible for Special Needs Kids in India
In India, the Aadhaar card is a crucial document for identification and access to various services. However, for parents of special needs children, the process of obtaining an Aadhaar card can present unique challenges. In this blog, we’ll explore the steps involved in acquiring an Aadhaar card for your child through a Government recognized enrollment center.
The Aadhaar card serves as a proof of identity and address for Indian residents. For every Indian including children with disabilities obtaining an Aadhaar card is equally important as it facilitates access to government schemes, educational institutions, healthcare services, and more. However, the process may require additional considerations and patience from one’s end.
Step 1: Document Preparation:
Before initiating the Aadhaar card application process, ensure you have all the necessary documents in order, beforehand. For a child, you’ll typically need:
●Birth certificate or any other proof of birthdate
●Proof of identity and address for the parents/guardians
●Passport-sized photographs of the child

Generally, all the enrollment centers are accessible for special needs children and adults.

Take an appointment prior to your visit, or simply walk-in. Accompany your child to the enrollment center along with all the necessary documents. Be prepared for potential waiting time ( generally range from 10- 15 minutes to an hour depending upon the no. of people), and ensure your child is comfortable throughout the process. The staff at the center are usually trained to assist individuals with special needs, but don’t hesitate to communicate any specific requirements or concerns.
Step 4: Enrollment Process:
Once at the center, follow the instructions provided by the staff. The enrollment process typically involves:
●Data entry of personal details
●Biometric data capture (photograph, fingerprints, iris scan) [I will discuss this in detail in my next week’s blog ] (*The UIDAI enrols children of all ages, including infants. However, biometric data is not collected for children under the age of 5 years. For children under 5 years of age, their Aadhaar is linked to one of their parents or guardians.)

5. Sensory Considerations: Bring sensory-friendly toys, engaging items, sensory box, necessary items like- food ( snacks) water bottle, headphones, fidget toys, or calming toys to help your child stay comfortable during the application process.
