Practicing Co-regulation

A Day in the Life -2

In last week’s post, I wrote about how we focus on nervous system harmony as our core organizing idea and how this concept has transformed our life. https://specialsaathi.com/2024/11/05/daily-rhythms-and-nervous-system-harmony/
This post explores the parent/ guide’s role in the process of enhancing nervous system harmony and implementing experiences that address learners’ nervous system harmony needs.

Tip of the Week

Pay balanced attention to guide’s own state and role in learning.

There are many definitions of coregulation. Read about the five tips for coregulation in the article by Kelly Mahler: https://www.kelly-mahler.com/resources/blog/the-power-of-co-regulation/  I use this definition because it spotlights the role of interoceptive awareness both for the guide and for the learner.

Five Tips
● Build mutual relationships.
● Be curious and seek to understand.
● Consider your own interoceptive state.
● Focus on Internal & External Stabilization
● Coregulate proactively.
Interoception is about awareness of internal body signals that help understand how we are feeling.

Visual Model
We present this idea visually through a folded tetrahedron model. The folded circle visually conveys balance.  Because of my Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) experience, I started focusing on my own role and developing my capacity to coregulate!

Key points

● Implement daily rhythms to enhance nervous system harmony.
● Be aware of your own interoceptive state. Maintain calmness, stay connected, and coregulate with learners during experiences.
● Create experiences that develop learner’s interoceptive awareness and the capacity to be calm, connected and coregulating.
● Enjoy learning daily.

Co-regulation and Self-regulation
Co-regulation is the path to self-regulation!
Guides who are aware of their own interoceptive state and are able to maintain calmness, stay connected, and coregulate with learners play an important role in developing selfregulation.
Hence, parents’ investment in their own calmness and nervous system harmony is very important to the development of their child’s capacity to coregulate and then selfregulate.  Given the push to address many challenges quickly, parents themselves may be stressed.
Our visual model suggests a path for transformation.  Coregulation with a calm guide with whom learners have a connection is key to the development of
