Learning Grammar with Theater Activities – 1

100 Days of Family Fun and Learning
Ananth and I have a launched a new series of videos on English grammar on the Ananth’s Adventures (@ananthsadventures) Youtube channel.
Our goal is to show how you can have fun with your child while learning grammar, writing, and other language and communication skills. Our video shows how you can use theater arts tools (e.g., movement and dance, music and rhythm, and storytelling) to make language arts learning enjoyable.

https://youtu.be/DASxiDdJMy8?si=l172W_gNYFw2hJQd
Video Contents
• The Tree story
• Definitions of sentence and noun. The definitions are presented as jingles
o The sentence jingle
o The noun jingle
• Examples of nouns in different categories.
• Identifying the subject noun.
The links to Shurley English Jingles are available in the description and are given below.
The sentence jingle video from Shurley Grammar shows the lyrics. Ananth recited the jingle but as seen in the Shurley video. you can also sing it. Ananth learned the older version of  the noun  jingle and that is the version he recited. I have included the links to both the older and newer versions in the description.

Getting Started
Get started with grammar with theater activities!
• Tell the tree story.
• Recite the sentence jingle.
• Recite the noun jingle.
• Talk about the nouns in Ramana thatha’s ashram.
• Talk about nouns in your home and neighborhood.
• Practice identifying the subject noun.
Do not make your child memorize the jingles.  Rather, repeat the jingles daily. Over time, your child will learn the jingles. Similarly, repeat the story for several days.

Learn about Trees
Learn about trees while learning grammar!  In my previous blog post, I shared a tree song video on Ananth’s Adventures.

• Recite the jingles.
• Narrate the tree story.
• Draw a picture of a tree and color it.
• Talk about nouns around the home.
• Write some sentences and practice identifying the subject noun.

About Theater Arts for Holistic Development
Theater is a vehicle for teaching anything.  By starting with movement activities and stories, you can make grammar and other skills fun to learn.
Theater Arts for Holistic Development (TAHD) was developed by Dr. Ambika Kameshwar, Founder and Director of RASA (Ramana Sunritya Aalaya). TAHD is not a drama course.  Rather, it shows how theater activities can be used as a structured tool for learning and development.
Ananth has been adding movement activities and stories to his youtube channel since January 2023.  Some of these videos are lessons by Sri Ujwal Jagadeesh, a TAHD facilitator at the Ramana Maharshi Center for Learning (RMCL).  Increasingly, he is adding his own story videos.  Now, we have enough resources for the next step.  We will use these resources to create language arts lessons.  As Ananth continues creating stories and other videos, we will continue to grow the theater resources for the videos.
