A parent recently asked me how I taught my child about odd and even numbers in math. Instead of me teaching him or giving direct lessons, my son learn on his own and I guide his learning by providing books, worksheets, and taking exams. My request for all the parents -“The best way to ask for advice from anyone is to ask – how can a particular topic be taught? And, do specify your child’s age and skill level, so others can give tailored help to you, as techniques and methods will differ from child to child.”

Among the foundational concepts in Mathematics is understanding odd and even numbers. Teaching children about odd and even numbers not only builds their mathematical skills but also enhances their problem-solving abilities. Here are some tips and resources to help you effectively teach odd and even numbers to your child:

1. Visual Method: Use visual aids such as colorful number toys, wooden peg puzzles, counters, blocks, flash cards or drawings on a piece of paper to represent odd and even numbers. Encourage your child to group these objects into pairs to illustrate even numbers and notice that odd numbers will have one left over.

2. Hands-On Activities: Engage your child in hands-on activities like sorting objects into two groups to differentiate between odd and even numbers. You can use everyday objects like clothes, coins, clothes pins, spoons, bowls or toys for this activity. Use scenarios like sharing candies or toys equally among friends to illustrate the concept of even distribution.

3. Interactive Games: Incorporate fun and interactive games into the learning process. Games like “Odd One Out” can make learning about odd and even numbers enjoyable for children. Online resources such as math game apps or websites also offer various games to reinforce this concept. 1. 4. Real-Life Examples: Point out real-life examples of odd and even numbers in everyday situations. While counting objects like birds, trees, cars in the parking, plants in your house, dining chairs or plates in the kitchen, discuss with your child whether the number is odd or even. For instance, when setting the table, ask kids to place an even number of plates on each side.

5. Number Line Exploration: Use a number line (you will find in all the mathematics books) to visually represent odd and even numbers. Guide your child in identifying patterns on the number line and understanding the alternation between odd and even numbers.

6. Storytelling: Create stories or scenarios that involve odd and even numbers to make the concept more relatable and engaging for children. Incorporating storytelling can help them grasp the concept in a meaningful context.

7. Practice books, Worksheets and tests: Provide practice tests, books, worksheets or printable activities specifically designed for learning odd and even numbers. These resources can reinforce the concept through repetition and application.

8. Patience and Encouragement: Be patient and supportive throughout the learning process. Celebrate your child’s progress and effort, and provide encouragement to boost their confidence in understanding odd and even numbers.
