Since my daughter’s diagnosis, the question that haunted me the most was “What after me?” Most of us have this questions. So, the next logical thing we do is gear up and prepare our kids for the world. I know, we are not immortals, but I want to live as long as possible. All I want is to live one day longer than my daughter. Keeping that in mind, I was looking for tools to elongate my life. So, to achieve that I need to have some measures to work on as its rightly said “What’s gets tracked, gets done”. So for that, we got some blood tests done, & lo-behold, we were in for few surprises.
Some of our blood markers were off the chart. We had 2 routes, either go pill-way or change our lifestyle. We chose the latter. & our journey for a good Metabolic Health began.
Diet is the biggest part of the change we had to do to get successful remission. Others things like better sleep, better emotional stability, follow for sure. Once we took the plunge, within 3 days, my husband’s snoring stopped. I realised early enough that if we are in the longer haul, we cannot do meal replacements, we can’t have individual meal-plans for everybody. To make it sustainable and enjoyable, we have to make changes in our existing plate, as that is where our comfort lies. We have to remove few items and increase the quantity of the leftovers as well as add nutrient-dense food. The older-version of the plate is not very helpful so we have to accept the new version to get back our health.
Upon reading and researching, I found that Insulin Resistance is the root cause of most of the lifestyle causing diseases. If we can fix that we can easily chase what we want. There is a dying that goes like “We are what we eat”, add “We are what we can digest” to it, and further, “We are what we can assimilate & evacuate”
Eating nutritious food is not the only thing, we need to make conducive environment in stomach to digest food too. ans Sugar plays a big role in that. Nowadays, sugar is in almost all our pods. It’s socially acceptable to have diseases associated with that. Unfortunately most of the times, we don’t know that the underlying cause of most of our problems is “Sugar not being metabolised by our body”.
There is an urgent need to look at our plate and learn to make changes and accept those changes. Metabolic diseases are on the rise, all are lifestyle diseases & Diet is a big part of it. I believe Diet can streamline all these issues.
Think of it, Biochemistry over behaviour. Now, imagine if we don’t eat too many carbs, body still can make energy, but now it makes Glucose from Fats. In the process, ketones are made, which has anti-epileptic effects on brain. In simpler terms, It effects or rather controls the excitability of neurons.
Eating too many times/too much causes waves of inflammation and oxidative stress. Diets low in carbs manages the spikes which leads to less inflammation meaning much calmness. Slowly slowly we take charge of our addictive behaviours of sugar and begin to thrive.
We stared to see a sea of changes in us after we made changes in our eating. My daughters Oral-Dental care improved, her unregulated giggling minimised, our blood markers got streamlined, to name a few.
There is no looking back now. As we continue, our belief in it, and ease to follow grows exponentially.
