A Father’s Journey with Autism- Chapter 10

In this blog I will discuss about some early intervention therapies applied & practiced by Simi which may be helpful for young parents having neurodivergent child.

1. Concept of Capital Letter & Small Letter

As discussed earlier, Simi learnt various alphabets by joining dots. After teaching her Capital Letters, we tried to give the concept of small letters to her. For this we wrote various words in Capital Letters and the same words in small letters in haphazard manner in two columns. Then we asked her to join the Capital Letter word with the relevant small letter word written in the opposite column. With rigorous practice for more than 25-30 days she could able to do the same correctly. One of the therapy sessions depicting the above work done by Simi is given in PIC-1 below: PICTURE-1

2. Concept of Big & Small
For concept of Big & Small we have followed the following techniques:
1. Draw Small & Big shapes of Circle, Square, Triangle, Star etc.
2. To place 5 (dots) . . . . . for small (as it comprises of 5 letters e.g.,  s  m  a  l  l) and 3 (dots) . . . for Big (comprising 3 letter word).
3. To call out the words (Small/ Big) and instruct her to write on the dots given under the picture.
4. To monitor Simi regarding where she has written Big/ Small
5. Colour the shapes (Big) with one and (Small) with different.

After practicing for 7-8 days, Simi could able to understand the concept of Big and Small. One of the activities done by Simi is given in Picture-2

3. Concept of Numbers
Before we started teaching Simi, Number concepts, we introduced her various shapes and asked her to join the similar shapes with number of x/o inside each shape.  One of the therapy sessions is given in Picture-3:

After Simi abled to do the above correctly, we drew shapes and told her to count and write the number in the box given. The Picture 4 given below is self-explanatory:

In my next blog, I will write about more early intervention therapy techniques used for development of other concepts. But one thing to be kept in mind that continuous practice is a must to get the desired outcome. The result will vary from child to child as all children are unique in their own abilities.
