Ahead of times: Dr Gayatri Narsimhan

Dr. Gayatri Narsimhan is a passionate Special Educator, Inclusive Education specialist, Vocational Trainer and Counsellor, with over a decade of experience in these fields. She is a true changemaker in the field of special education and vocational training.

With her vast experience and knowledge in these fields, she founded Prakramika Institute in Chennai, India, in 2014 to work for the betterment of children with special needs. Her goal was to improve the quality of life of children with special needs, equip them to be independent, and integrate them into society to lead a meaningful and dignified life.

Dr. Narsimhan is a passionate special educator, inclusive education specialist, vocational trainer, and counselor. She has a doctorate in Special Education and a post-graduate degree in Psychology, as well as specializations in yoga as therapy, handwriting modification, sensory therapy, behavior modifications, and related professional qualifications. She is also a “POSH Practitioner” and ‘Internal Committee Specialist’ to address grievances related to Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace.

As the main faculty of PVI, she is involved in providing skill development courses online to hundreds of children and young adults with special needs and empowering them to work in various industries through collaborations with placement firms. Her work and initiatives towards these children are offered only as a service, without any compromise on the quality and rigor needed for these courses.

Since its inception in 2015, PVI has successfully conducted free comprehensive vocational training in major Indian cities, such as Lucknow, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, and Kozhikode (in tie-up with NGOs) and also in Oman for special educators, teachers, parents, and caregivers of neurodiverse children/adults.

After the onset of the pandemic, PVI commenced free online training sessions/webinars for the neurodiverse community in both India and Oman.

In January 2021, PVI offered the first course on Front office management to 14 neurodiverse adults from India, Oman, and Abudhabi. The course was conducted online due to the pandemic, but by proper structuring of the course, focusing more on practical demonstrations and arranging interactions with professionals from the hotel industry, the course ensured that the students acquired the needed skills.

Buoyed by the success and to give more options to the neurodiverse, the program was widened in June 2021 to offer a three-month course on Front office management, graphic design, teacher assistant, workplace communication, and MS Office. In view of the rising demand and popularity of the courses, PVI scaled up its operations to offer free structured Career Pro courses since January 2022. Even though the courses offered are free, there is no compromise in quality, as it is ensured that the curriculum is suitable to the skills required and there is quality in content delivery.

Through PVI, Dr. Narsimhan has touched the lives of countless neurodiverse individuals, providing them with the skills and training they need to succeed in life. Her dedication to this cause has helped to improve the lives of those with special needs, allowing them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Dr. Narsimhan is a true changemaker, and her work will continue to inspire and benefit generations to come.
